What kind/genre of music do you accept?

You name it, we accept it. We receive entries from esoteric jazz to classic cowboy poems. From death metal to folk. One of the benefits of joining the Artist Weekly community is finding groups of artists who share appreciation for whatever you are in to. This is your forum to show off your creation, don't be shy.

How do I make an MP3?

You can convert a CD to MP3 format with an MP3 encoder. (Many of which can be found here) There are many mp3 encoders to use, but we prefer iTunes. Make sure you save your mp3 file in this format: ArtistName_SongName.mp3

I don't have a CD of my music to burn an MP3 from. Can I still enter?

Yes. You can record directly to your computer in MP3 format. There are several recording software packages available for home use. Also, most PCs are equipped with a mic. Play your song directly into the mic and save it as an MP3.

Does recording quality matter?

Not really. We have to be able to hear your lyrics but we don't need a full studio production. We can hear a good song buried in bad production quality, and likewise, a bad song can't hide behind a symphony arrangement.

OK, I entered. When do I get feedback?

You will receive feedback almost immediately after entering a song. Once your song is uploaded, it enters the playlist at the top, and every visitor to Artist Weekly can rate and leave feedback.

Who are the judges?

Our judges are the A&R, management, marketing, songwriting, and label president guys that you are trying to get in front of. They do not want to be hassled by a thousand people who think their song should win. For this reason, our judges will remain completely anonymous. Besides, thanks to our industry friends we have a rotating pool of judges to which we are constantly adding, so our list of judges is a little tough to keep up with. Suffice it to say, these are the folks you want listening to your stuff and they can definitely give you some good advice, so take their feedback with an open mind.

Why would a music industry pro want to be a judge?

Believe it or not, there are still industry people who like music and want to find undiscovered talent. By serving as a judge they are at the forefront of an exciting new outlet for songwriters. It is also liberating for our judges. Because they are anonymous, they can give their true opinion on the entries they hear - something that label politics don't often allow. And no, we don't pay them much.

My song didn't win last week. Can I enter it again?

Yes. You may enter a song more than once. Maybe the last judge to hear it was a jerk. Maybe the competition won't be so tough next week. But maybe there was a reason why it didn't win. A smart songwriter will take our feedback and do a little more work on their song before re-entering it.

Free?

Yes. We're cheap. We hate spending money and we hate losing money even more. When you spend $50 to enter a contest with impossible odds and never even get word that your entry has been received much less listened to, you are losing money. We feel that a songwriting contest should be a tool to facilitate an artists growth, not the growth of some dude's bank account.

Should I worry about copyrights? Are you guys gonna steal my music?

Your music is yours. We don't take any ownership of your music. That said, it's always a good idea to protect your music with a copyright and with the help of a licensing group like ASCAP or BMI.
